Chaitra Parthiban, Melanie Shears, and Sean Murphy joined thousands of other global health researchers at National Harbor, Maryland for the annual American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Meeting. Our UW laboratory team presented findings on murine and rhesus models of malaria in our efforts to develop an effective malaria vaccine. The meeting is a tremendous opportunity to connect with colleagues from all over the world and to generate new and impactful ideas and collaborations to improve global health. For more info, go to the ASTMH site.
The Murphy Laboratory is looking forward to hiring several new team members in 2020 for projects in malaria vaccinology, immunology and molecular diagnostics. When officially opened, the positions will be posted on the UWHires website. More specific information will be posted here as well. If you are interested, please take a look at our research programs and contact us by email or at ASTMH 2019 in National Harbor, Maryland.
Today November 6 is Malaria Day in the Americas, a day commemorated by PAHO and countries in the Americas to keep up the focus on malaria interventions and elimination efforts. 132 million people in this part of the world live in malaria at-risk regions. Tremendous gains have been made against this disease in the Americas but sustained progress and eventual elimination requires us to work even harder at all levels including basic and applied research, government service, public health, and other critical sectors. Be part of the solution to #EndMalaria, & be an advocate for malaria elimination #MalariaDayAmericas #zeromalaria
The complexity of malaria sporozoites is amazing! Check out this new paper by Scott Lindner, Kristian Swearingen, our own Melanie Shears, Stefan Kappe and others that sheds light on how the parasite waits at the ready for that moment when a mosquito bites a human using two waves of transcriptional repression.
