The Murphy Laboratory in collaboration with the Seattle Malaria Clinical Trials Center is conducting a new clinical trial focused on detection of malaria parasites in people who have asymptomatic infection. Unlike most studies that have evaluated such infections in Africa, Asia and South/Central America where malaria transmission is active, this MC-005 study aims to examine such infections in people who have left an endemic area and now reside in non-endemic regions. This study may shed light on the immunological responses that underlie such asymptomatic infections and may help to define a parasite infection level that delineates transmissible from non-transmissible infections.
